About The Experience

Pēteris Krilovs' film "THE RED BARN" (SARKANAIS ŠĶŪNIS) is a poetic tapestry of history and the present, creating a portrait of the Latvian émigré artist Raimonds Staprāns. The film explores the artist's responsibility in the face of history, blending the personal with the political. A small red barn on the Baltic Sea coast serves as a metaphor for Staprāns, an expressionist of realism, transforming into a historical laboratory for Latvian and European events, as well as a reference point for the artist's life journey. Krilovs, a master of staged documentary cinema, reveals Staprāns in his latest work as a thinker, painter, and playwright with a keen and philosophical interest in Latvia, despite living across the ocean. Actors portray historical figures in the film, posing questions to the director.
