The Cultural Center “Siguldas devons” invites you to a screening of Pēteris Krilovs' documentary film “The Red Barn,” dedicated to the artist Raimonds Staprāns. The film explores the life and work of Staprāns, a nearly centenarian Latvian painter and playwright who, after fleeing Soviet occupation, became an acclaimed artist in the USA. Director Krilovs uses the metaphor of a red barn to examine the relationship between the artist and power, intertwining the personal with the political, the Californian aesthetic with the Latvian palette, and fictional cinema with documentary materials. The film reveals Staprāns as a thinker, painter, and playwright with a keen and philosophical interest in Latvia, even while living across the ocean.
